Continuing the story of Hannibal and his wars with Rome, this is the third book in the series. The story is told through the eyes of a Carthaginian soldier, Hanno, and his one-time friend a Roman soldier, Quintus.
In the first book, Hannibal: Enemy of Rome, Hanno was captured by slavers when he went fishing with his friend Suni. Separated from Suni, Hanno was held a slave in Rome but befriended his owner’s son and daughter, Quintus and Aurelia. He escaped slavery with the help of his friends. Re-united with his older brothers Bostar and Sapho he joined the army of Hannibal.
In the second book, Hannibal: Fields of Blood the two Hanno faces the Romans at Cannae unaware that Quintus is among the Roman army under an assumed name following an argument with his father. There is family tension between Hanno and his brothers. In Rome Aurelia and family struggle with debt and her mother plans to marry her to resolve the situation.
This third book starts in Apulia in Southern Italy, 216BC, shortly after the Carthaginian victory at Cannae. Then shifts two and a half years, still at Apulia. Following an argument between his two brothers, observed by Hannibal, Hanno is separated from his siblings as they receive different sets of orders from their General.
