Firstly – I haven’t re-read these stories since original publication. So it is almost as though I am looking at them for the first time. There is much that I didn’t remember.

I am reviewing from a Pdf copy so can’t comment on anything such as gutter loss, I am assuming given the quality of recent 2000AD publications there will be no gutter loss.

The wording on the cover is slightly odd ‘Incubus and other stories’ There are only two stories reprinted here. Incubus is an alternative name for Judge Dredd vs Aliens.

The two stories are written by Judge Dredd creator John Wagner, in the case of Aliens he wrote with Andy Diggle. Andy Diggle was Editor for 2000AD from 2000 to 2002 after which he turned to writing. I’d hazard a guess there is some connection to those facts here.

Both stories are written as stand alone stories and everything readers need to know is in each story. The stories are usually considered to be within the main 2000AD continuity, though not by all readers.

I really enjoyed re-reading these, as I say I’ve not re-read them since publication. I had forgotten for example that in Predator vs Judge Dredd there was a descendant of Dutch Schaefer, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character in the original Predator film. Judge Schaefer is a Psi Auxiliary. Mega-City One has a number of Auxiliary positions, including the more famous ones such as Resyk, Meat Wagon crews and office staff.

Interestingly enough Judge Dredd vs Aliens we meet more Auxiliaries, in this case Verminators, pest control specialists. It is important to remember that Justice Department are Police, Army and Government in Mega-City One with an elected Mayor little more than a figurehead, one often ignored. So almost all public service organisations are either run by Judges or Auxiliaries.

Importantly these stories not only stay true to Dredd but they stay true to the Predator and Aliens settings.

The art in both stories is brilliant, I really love the opening in the Cursed Earth in Predator.

A great read for Dredd, Predator or Aliens fans!
