This episode features Maisie Williams, Arya Stark in Game of Thrones and is again a two-part story.
This episode has been much anticipated given some of the tiny clips of it that were included in the season trailer. Much speculation around the ‘What kept you old man?’ line.
Firstly my big gripe… Horns on helmets? Really? That is sloppy writing or costuming surely. Vikings didn’t wear horned helmets. The only excuse can be to make this match continuity with the Time Meddler. However no such worries are taken regarding Sontarans or Ice Warriors looking the same as they did in the original series. This costume blooper really did sit badly with me.
That said there was plenty to like. The comedy elements, apart from the look of the Vikings, were great. The fight training scenes particularly were funny. Plus the Baby Talk, which I am not certain is the Tardis translation circuit by the way, was comedy relief but worked into the plot nicely enough.
Masie was excellent. That really is one thing Doctor Who has done well many times, getting good actors in and giving them great parts; I’m sure many fans can think of good actors getting clunkers too. From the ‘next week’ trailer I think there should be plenty for the young British actress to get her teeth in to.
The nods to previous Assistants continues plus a well loved Pertwee line is reused. These can be intrusive sometimes but they were used well here.
I think we saw one of the themes of this series. I’m not certain but three stories in and three deaths that didn’t happen with technology being the reason why. Last season it was people dying and being collected by Missy… Maybe if this proves to be an over arching theme I might forgive the uses of this in the previous stories.
I do wish that Doctor Who would drop the ‘Next Episode trailer and the ‘Last Episode’ recap. I’d like to see a return to the old resolution to a cliff hanger that used to be used in the original stories. I understand that trailers are supposed to increase viewings but personally I prefer to see everything for the first time in the actual episode.
