365 Poems for 2021 #21

This Blog  started off as a place for a Judge Dredd RPG that never started. Then it became a Reviews blog for Comics & Film with a firm Judge Dredd bias.

The top read article is about Polar Bears.

Polar Bears.

That is because the Blog diversified and I wrote about History, Science & Nature and more – including reviews about Jousting

Very varied interests. But bringing them all together is my love of writing. Continue reading

Why is this Blog Quiet & What is 2021 bringing?

Most years I do a round up of the last year. Nah, not this time. We all know about 2020.

2021 might be better.

Sadly already Lawless has been cancelled. Lawless is a Comic Con in Bristol, usually in May where I am a Moderator on Panels. I also sit on the Organiser’s group.

So that is a big loss to me. I love meeting up with my friends at Cons and I really enjoy Moderating.

We will be doing somethings online in May so keep an eye out.

But what else am I doing? And why has this blog been quite quiet recently?

Block Mania Board Game reprinted – Available from Friday 27th November 2020

Block Mania pairingLimited-edition replica printing

Available from 2000AD.com from 12noon on Friday 27 November
And Asmodee UK

Block Mania Board Game was for two Players.

The expansion Mega Mania added two nore Playboards and more pieces so that Four Players could take part.

There is no mention of Price in the Press Release I received and I can’t see one on the 2000AD site.

Back in the 1980s I had a very active group of friends to play with and one bought this.

There were 6 of us, with a few extra people around the sides, so it was a bit frought who would get invited to play this. Out of our core six only two, me included, were regular 2000AD readers. But everyone enjoyed this game.

I was the biggest Dredd fan among us. I loved this game.

Digital Only Releases from 2000AD for 2021

Rebellion Publishing have announced a number of Digital Only releases coming in 2021. They previously increased the Digital Only releases in March when the UK went in to Lockdown. Deciding to increase releases in 2021 instead of adding to those already sceduled for Print they would continue Digital Only releases.

At times Rebellion have done some Digital First releases, there is nothing official regarding whether that may continue.

Mike Molcher, Rebellion PR says:

“Featuring work by Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Boys), Sean Phillips (Criminal, Reckless), Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk), John Wagner (Judge Dredd), Alan Grant (Batman), and Pat Mills (Marshal Law), the new series of digital collections will bring together thrills old and new – including some that have never been available digitally before!

The new digital releases will be available from the 2000 AD app for Apple, Android, and Windows 10 devices, as DRM-free PDF/CBZ downloads from the 2000 AD webshop, and on Amazon Kindle devices.”

Ben Smith, Head of Film, TV and Publishing at Rebellion, said:

“This new series of digital-only collections available from our app and webshop are a fantastic dive into 2000 AD’s incredible backlist. Our archives are bursting at the seams with hidden gems that have either never been collected or just haven’t been digitised before, so it’s great to be able to make them available. The advance of digital-only collections is that we can bring these classics direct to the readers without having to add even more books to our already bumper publishing schedule.”

Titles being release as Digital Only come from thoughout the variety of 2000AD stories. A full list of those currently announced follows. Most are currently out of print, some are seeing publication for the first time since being in the weekly Prog.

I am including only Covers as currently revealed, these may change. Continue reading

Jim Killen may not be a name every Comic Fan knows but his influence on Publishing is quite extensive. He joins Rebellion on Monday 19th October 2020 as Editor-at-Large, based out of New York.

After joining Barnes & Noble in 1979 as a Storeb Manager he became a Buyer in October 1987. In 1998 he became Science Fiction, Fantasy, Role Playing Games and Graphic Novels buyer. Under his direction the store was influential in the success of many well known names. He also doubled the floorspace for Graphic Novels in Barnes & Noble.

With a background of formal training in Illustration and Graphic Design at the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1979 to 1982 he was well placed at Barnes and Nobel. Among those who have benefited from his patronage include Neil Gaiman, V.E. Schwab, Marjorie Liu, Kim Harrison, and George R.R. Martin.

Joining Rebellion, described by BBC as a “British Media Giant”, he brings a massive amount of influence and knowledge of the US market, an area Rebellion has had mixed results with over the years.

This is one of my all time favourites from the golden era of 2000AD.

I ended up reading the full series of novels and wish the adaptations had continued. The Novels held a quote of ‘Monty Python of the Spacelanes – Daily Telegraph’. Not being a fan of Monty Python I doon’t quite agree but knowing such a quote might bring more sales I let it slide.

What do we know so far about this book? Continue reading

A Tabletop Roleplaying Game

New Expansions:
Rogue Trooper
Strontium Dog

A Tabletop Roleplaying game is a cooperative game for, usually, 3 or more players. One player is the Games Master (GM) who holds all the Rules and the details of the adventure. The rest of the Players take the role of a character in the story.

This blog was created for a Judge Dredd Roleplaying Game which sadly never happened. I had played in a Play by Forum game called Play Dredd, both as a Player and a GM. Despite good intentions it seemed that we were all burnt out. Lack of drive and it fizzled before it began. So I switched to using the Blog for Reviews.

I’ve played a lot of Roleplaying games round the table – and a few dressed up wielding foam-and-latex weapons – that’s another story.

Currently due to Covid-19 I’m playing a couple of games online with the friends I would usually sit around the table with.

I have not played these 2000AD games yet but I am considering starting a game – I haven’t yet decided which setting to use.

So what are these games about?

A pivotal story bringing Judge Dredd in to a ‘modern era’ this was a story chosen to lead the Launch of Judge Dredd Megazine in October 1990.

A risky move in some ways as Dredd is a support Character. The official title is America so this storyh wasv not collected in the Judge Dredd omnibus collection. It has of course been reprinted several times.

Why this version? This version includes scripts for comparison to the final story. Comments on this from John Wagner gives extra insight.

There are a few preview pages at the end of this article Continue reading
