Short Story – Food for Thought (topic – horror)

There’s a partly written comic somewhere, aren’t there a lot of those? In that story I established the basics for a setting that ties in to the Western short story I recently shared.

Rules I decided for the world in that unfinished comic are consistent with this one. This story is set in the first weeks of a Pandemic (sorry/not sorry).

I wrote this in roughly half an hour, no major edit.

How the West was Lost

This story is the first draft of a story I sent to someone who wanted a Cowboy/Zombie story for an RPG he is working on. It got rejected so I haven’t taken it past first draft. I was going to expand it, this is more or less just an intro and would have been maybe half as long again and then followed up with an action scene.

I may still return to this, but thought I’d share it. Continue reading

DayZ – Dare you play this Zombie Game?

dayZI don’t play many PC Games.

There are many reasons for this, depending on the type of game. Mostly though it is time… I just don’t have enough time to play them as I spend most of my ‘spare’my time reading and writing.

When I do play games I tend to binge on one. I like strategy games so sometimes I’ll play Civilization IV for days on end. I also like Sims2 and will binge on that.

I like RPGs… but I’m afraid I rarely find anyone who Roleplays enough on those. I dread the phrase ‘I’ll get my other toon’… I used to have a lot of fun on Neverwinter Nights, there were a couple of great RP servers a few years back.

RPGs… it isn’t just the lack of RP but also the respawning and leveling gets on my nerves though.

DayZ though… Ooooo that hits some buttons. Continue reading

Cover: Jon Taylor

Genre – Horror

An anthology of horror stories from the Editors that run 2000AD fanzines Zarjaz & Dogbreath. Ten stories with very varied themes, most but not all have a twist in the end.

Balancing an anthology of this kind isn’t always going to be easy. The same themes or similar twists in the endings need to be avoided. Similarly the art needs to be varied and suit the story. Also, and this is important to me in a small press anthology, I like to see different story lengths. 2000AD has stories that are between 4 and 6 pages long most commonly.

I skim anthologies before I read them, I’ve read antholgies for forty years so I’m adept at not spoiling the stories when I do it. I’m reviewing this from a paper copy, I much prefer paper, skimming through I could easily see the variety in lengths of story and art styles. On skimming I saw that one art style was on only two pages.

So I knew that these stories varied in length and art styles and had the Editors delivered on all counts?

Art & Letters: David Broughton

I reviewed Martillo recently, illustrated by David Broughton. Here’s another great comic from him. This one written by Shaun Avery. Shaun has been published in Zarjaz, Dogbreath and the The Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel. So there are reviews of some of his work already on this blog.

It’s no coincidence. As with many of the professionals I review on this blog many of the small press titles link in some way to 2000AD. Zarjaz and Dogbreath are fanzines and many of the creators are members of the 2000AD forum. Quite simply it is rather more likely I will like something from people who already like things I like.

There are a few bits of preview art in this review but obviously I’m avoiding major spoilers. Continue reading

I was enthralled by this when I first read it and I don’t think I’ve re-read it before today for over twenty years. It has aged a little, mostly the slight repetition at the start of each episode, like the last two minutes of a Dr Who episode from the same era starting the next.

Reprinted in full for the first time and presented in the original ratio and mostly in black and white. Two pages are in colour, indicating an outing on the centre pages. There are nine preview pages at the end of this review. Continue reading

Mix Colour and Black & White

Available from Comicsy £3.50

Written, Drawn and lettered by
David Broughton

This is SciFi Horror, Comicsy recommend this for ‘mature’ readers, I’d say 12 and up.

I’ve reviewed a few anthologies that have featured work by David, including Zarjaz, Dogbreath and The Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel. In all cases it has been his artwork and I think in the Journal of Time Travel it has also been his lettering.

This book has three stories and a couple of pages of character and gear designs at the back. Continue reading

Paragon 15Paragon issue 15

through Lulu.com

This is a small press anthology some of the contributors can be found in other anthologies such as the The Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel, Zarjaz and Dogbreath.

Paragon is 44 pages of A4 in black and white, reasonably priced at £2.50. There are five stories in this issue all are either complete or start this issue – making this a good ‘jump-on point’.

The contents page includes a short cartoon, the size you might find on the ‘funny pages’ in a newspaper, entitled Monsters Zinc. A Mummy and a Vampire in a bar, scoping for girls… quite funny.

There are spoilers below but I’ve left them reasonably light. Continue reading
